EVERY DECEMBER, MY HEART ALWAYS COMES BACK TO THE SAME THOUGHT: “WHAT DO WE WANT OUR CHILDREN — AND OUR LOVED ONES — TO REMEMBER?”
Not the wrapping paper. Not the plastic toys. Not the rush.
But the moments. The laughter. The connection. The memory of being together.
Years ago, when we first began travelling full-time and living light, our whole approach to Christmas shifted. Without a home full of cupboards or space for clutter, something beautiful happened: We stopped buying things… and started gifting memories.
It changed everything.
Now, choosing gifts for Christmas feels joyful, not stressful. Meaningful, not wasteful. And honestly? More magical than any Christmas we had before.
Here’s how we create a Christmas filled with connection, adventure and love — not stuff.
My mum is like so many mums — her phone is bursting with photos but her home barely holds any of them. So one Christmas, we turned her favourite moments into a beautiful photo book she could keep out, flick through, and treasure. Seeing her hold her memories — as a real book, not a screen — was priceless. It’s now her favourite thing we’ve ever given her.
One of my all-time favourite gifts: family photos turned into colouring books. My sister and nieces spent hours colouring in their own memories — silly faces, adventures, family pets. It’s creative, personal, and completely unique.
With my sister, the best gift is always the same: time together. A day out somewhere new — a café, a walk, an adventure that fills our hearts. One of our favourite gifts to each other was seeing P!nk live in concert. The energy, the music, the sister magic of it all… we still smile thinking about it.
She also gave me one of the most treasured gifts of my entire life: a teddy bear hand-stitched from our dad’s pyjamas and his army tie. I cried when I opened it. It wasn’t just a gift — it was a piece of him I could hold. A memory made soft, familiar, and safe.
For our little brother, we choose experiences we can share — day trips, fun outings, surprises. He remembers every adventure, every laugh, every moment.
For Mum, we plan a special meal out somewhere cosy where we can talk, laugh and truly be present.
For Dad — before he passed — we always prebooked a Sunday lunch somewhere he loved. It became our tradition. A moment together. A memory I treasure now more than ever.
Some gifts become family legends. I once took my mum to Blackpool for a few days because she had always dreamed of going. We walked, talked, laughed, and soaked up every second.
My husband did the same for his mum: her dream was to see the Northern Lights, so he took her to Iceland. She stood under the shimmering sky, tears in her eyes, watching her dream come true. Gifts like that shape a lifetime.
One of our family values is simple: “Gifts should grow you, not clutter you.”
When our daughter fell in love with sewing, fashion and designing, we gifted her tools for her creativity — a sewing machine, threads, patterns.
Our son is passionate about sustainable living, farming and nature. We choose gifts that nurture that — books, hands-on experiences, outdoor adventures.
He also has the most beautiful heart. One year, he made personalised books for family members, sharing what he loves about them. Another year, he stitched a mini-him for his cousin who adores cuddles. That little soft toy became an instant treasure.
Some of our favourite experience gifts have included diving with sharks, kayaking, indoor skydiving, and snowboarding lessons. Experiences build confidence and memories in ways toys never will.
For each other, we keep it intentional and meaningful. A journal, a book, a date-day adventure, a shared experience, something that nudges us toward our dreams.
One year, I treated all my favourite ladies to a spa day — and the best part was, I got to go too. A gift for them, a gift for me, and a memory we still laugh about.
It’s tiny, fun and meaningful — a travel game, a puzzle, a craft project. Something that adds joy, not clutter.
The older I get, the more I realise: people don’t remember things — they remember moments.
The gift that becomes part of their story. The memory that becomes part of their heart.
Experience gifts make Christmas deeper, calmer, softer. They bring families together. They make holidays feel purposeful again.
You don’t need a big budget or a big tree. You just need thoughtfulness, presence and love.
That is the real magic of Christmas.
